The Machine

The Dell Optiplex GX260, a pretty solid and decent machine, this particular example is somewhat shrouded in mystery as to what it came from the factory. But what I do know is: It had a Pentium 4 2.0ghz Northwood,  probably 512mbs of ram, a 40gb hdd, and no add in cards. This example is a DT variant sporting the usual 180 watt psu and blower style coolers. It was a mid range model from the factory, having a Pentium and a agp slot installed overall resulting in a decent system, this one was manufactured in 2003.

The upgrades this lad has recieved is a faster CPU, 2.4ghz northwood, although when I get the money I plan up upgrading it to a 2.8ghz northwood. 2gbs of DDR1, a 260gb hdd, and a Nvidia 6200 256mb. It retains the original CPU cooler, power supply, cd-rw and floppy drive.

This machine actually does have a few flaws that need to be resolved. Both the DT and SFF models of the GX240, GX260, GX270 have a cooling design flaw, at the bare minimum they need a cooling shroud added to the CPU fan to help with the system recirculating it's own hot air. There is a model online for the SFF's and I will soon be uploading the model I made for the DT that I'm using in my system. If you choose to add a GPU, which you should, you also need to add a addition blower fan for cooling the card if it is passive due to the low natural airflow in the GPU slot for the DT, SFF I'm not sure. Depending on how hot your hdd is you may also need to try and assist it's cooling as well, for my drive I put a thermal pad between it and the case to resolve that. And the last issue is the capacitor plague, these towers, are pretty susceptible to having capacitor problems and blowing their tops, I ended up doing a recap on mine. Although interestingly enough the machine ran fine on the exploded caps, I just replaced them for longevity and maintenance. And the last little thing I did with my machine was tape up some of the lil gaps on the power supply to help airflow since it gets pretty hot.

This Machines history was me getting it shortly after the B110, also from my Friend Mason. It was taken apart when I received it, but mostly complete and didn't take much to get running. This is my first machine with a agp slot and first system with a floppy drive stock.

The system is a dual booter, running both Windows XP, and Lubuntu 18.04. I am considering changing the linux distro but not 100% sure. Overall resulting in a very stable and decently capable tower, that also happens to be very quite.
